Dedicated to raising awareness and philanthropic support for Sheba Medical Center’s compassionate care, cutting-edge research and comprehensive educational training, throughout the years, American Friends of Sheba has continued to grow and gain momentum.
For decades, this passionate support has allowed Sheba to provide pioneering, life-saving treatments to patients in Israel and around the world.
American Friends of Sheba Medical Center is a nonprofit organization based in New York City, Florida and Houston. Sheba Medical Center at Tel HaShomer is the largest and most comprehensive hospital in Israel and the entire Middle East.
The New York-based organization was inspired in 1950 when Sheba Medical Center’s founder and namesake, Dr. Chaim Sheba, visited New York. While there, Dr. Sheba met with the Manhattan Guild, an organization that had been very active in helping the fledgling State of Israel come into being. With Israel’s independence established, the Manhattan Guild was looking for new ways to continue its support for Israel.
Over the years, the Manhattan Guild has had a profound impact on Sheba Medical Center’s growth and development. This chapter, dedicated to supporting Sheba, later transformed into American Friends of Sheba Medical Center, Tel HaShomer.
American Friends of Sheba Medical Center has organized many gala events to spread the word throughout the New York metropolitan area and to raise funds to support the hospital’s growth and development. Sister organizations also emerged in Los Angeles, Brazil and Europe. American Friends of Sheba is now expanding its footprint into South Florida and Houston, with an emerging chapter there.
Many foundations and philanthropists have joined the effort to support Sheba’s medical programs such as the Rehabilitation Center, the new state-of-the art Emergency Center, the Israel Center for Medical Simulation, the Talpiot Training Program for gifted young physicians, the I-PEARLS Center of Excellence to help pediatric burn victims, and many other vital programs. And with strong support from American Friends of Sheba, Sheba Medical Center continues to hold true to the hospital’s original focus, the treatment and rehabilitation of wounded Israeli soldiers and victims of terror.
